78% of the noncoding beat rests on a claim that nobody has done something
also called noncoding gap ledger · absence-claim audit
We went through every entry about the non-protein-coding side of this disease and counted how often it argues from something nobody has done yet. Eighteen of twenty-three entries do, and most of those statements carry no date and no search behind them — which is exactly the kind that was proved wrong three times in a single sweep.
The same thing, for a scientist
Across the 23 entries in the genome beat plus all noncoding_element nodes, 41 sentences assert an absence. 12 are HIGH tier (asserted as fact in a summary or an evidence claim) and 8 of those 12 are unbounded — no date, no database, no count. The 5 bounded ones name a date and a record count and are reproducible. HIGH-and-unbounded is the exact profile of the three absence claims falsified in the cycle-36 sweep of this same beat.
Why this analysis exists, and what it replaced
Five hypotheses in the genome beat named ana-noncoding-gap-ledger-kmt2a-r as the analysis that tests them. That node did not exist. The reference was dangling, and the schema validator did not check ids referenced from inside data{} — only edges. So the rule every hypothesis needs at least one experiment or analysis was being satisfied by a pointer to nothing, in five places at once.
The validator now checks these references (13 dangling refs were found the first time it ran), and this is the analysis that was promised.
The result: the count is not the problem, the phrasing is
| count | |
|---|---|
| entries examined | 23 |
| entries resting on at least one absence claim | 18 (78.3%) |
| absence sentences in total | 41 |
| HIGH — asserted as fact in a summary or evidence claim | 12 |
| MEDIUM — carrying an argument in section prose | 14 |
| LOW — in an open question or caveat, where naming a gap is correct | 15 |
| HIGH and unbounded — no date, no database, no count | 8 |
78% sounds alarming and mostly is not. A beat about what has not been measured will legitimately say so, and 15 of the 41 sit in open questions or caveats, which is what those fields are for.
The useful split is bounded versus unbounded. An absence claim that names a date, a database and a count — "as of 2026-09-18, PubMed returns 23 records for HOTAIRM1 with leukemia" — is reproducible: a reader can re-run it and see whether it still holds. One that says "nobody has measured X" is a bare assertion that decays silently as the literature moves, and cannot be checked without redoing the work.
All three absence claims falsified in the cycle-36 sweep were unbounded. The bounded ones in this beat have so far survived. That is one beat and a small sample, but it is the axis worth acting on: 8 unbounded HIGH claims against 4 bounded ones.
The eight to fix
Each of these asserts an absence to the reader as fact, with nothing behind it that can be re-run. The fix is not to delete them — several are probably true — but to give each a date, a database and a count, or to soften it to what the evidence supports.

What a regex cannot tell you
This is a text audit, not a fact check. It does not know whether any of these claims is true. It finds the sentences whose form makes them fragile; confirming or refuting each one is the literature work it is meant to prioritise, not replace.
It also cannot distinguish a load-bearing absence from a passing mention, and it will flag a counter-evidence note that correctly reports an absence having been refuted — which is the opposite of a defect. And it only matches phrasings in its pattern, so the count is a floor, not a total.

| headline | 78% of the noncoding beat rests on an absence claim, but the actionable number is 8: HIGH-tier claims with no date, database or count. All three absence claims falsified in the cycle-36 sweep had exactly that profile. |
| caveat | A regex over prose cannot tell a load-bearing absence claim from a hedge that merely mentions one, and it will flag counter-evidence notes that correctly REPORT an absence having been refuted. Every hit is a candidate for reading, not a defect. Conversely it cannot see an absence asserted in wording it does not match, so the count is a floor. |

- An audit that rewards phrasing can be satisfied by phrasing. Adding 'as of 2026-09-19, PubMed returns N records' to a claim makes it pass this check whether or not the query was well-scoped — and a badly-scoped search that looks rigorous is worse than an honest 'nobody has looked'.
- Ranking entries by absence claims penalises the beats that are most honest about their gaps. The noncoding entries say what is missing; a beat that simply never mentions its gaps scores perfectly here and is in worse shape.
- Do the 8 unbounded HIGH claims survive a dated search? Each needs one query, and the three already falsified suggest a non-trivial failure rate.
- Does the same audit over the whole graph find the same 78%, or is the noncoding beat unusually dependent on absence? A beat about what has not been measured may simply be honest.
- Should the schema require that an absence claim in summary_lay or an evidence claim carry a retrieval date? That is enforceable in the validator, unlike its truth.
- E1strong confidence 4 of 5: Replicated in peer-reviewed work by more than one group.analysis
Across 23 entries in the genome beat and all noncoding_element nodes, 41 sentences assert that something has not been done. 18 of 23 entries (78.3%) contain at least one. 12 are HIGH tier — asserted as fact in a summary or an evidence claim — and 8 of those carry no date, database or count. The remaining 4 HIGH claims are bounded and reproducible.
Noncoding gap ledger and absence-claim audit, computed over this graph · Oncofusion knowledge graph, analyses/noncoding-gap-ledger 2026What this evidence cannot show
Computed by the coordinator on 2026-09-19; script and full per-sentence output are in analyses/noncoding-gap-ledger/. This is a regex over prose and establishes the FORM of a claim, never its truth. It cannot separate a load-bearing absence from a passing mention, it flags counter-notes that correctly report an absence having been refuted, and it only matches phrasings in its pattern — so every number here is a floor. The tiering by field is a judgement encoded in code, not a measurement.
Evidence that argues against this (1)
- The bounded/unbounded split is suggestive, not established. It rests on three falsified claims in one beat in one cycle, all unbounded, against bounded claims that have not yet been tested by anyone trying to refute them — so the bounded ones may simply be younger rather than sounder. A dated PubMed count is also only as good as its query: a bounded claim with a badly-scoped search is more dangerous than an unbounded one, because it looks rigorous. This project has already logged a query returning zero that turned out to be a silent tool failure, and a search hit that was a mangrove rivulus fish paper matching on a substring.
